The Border Collie was born in the British Isles in the border country of England and Scotland. Historians say that "Collie" derives from a Gaelic word meaning "something useful", some say it comes from "coalie", a word meaning black. A Border Collie moves livestock by controlled intimidation. He pushes them along with a threatening glare. This glare is called "eye" and one of the unique traits for which the Border Collie is known for today. It is also one of the few breeds that is still used for his traditional purpose in his homeland and in the U.S. Border Collies are a wonderful breed although not for everyone. It takes a person who is willing to train, exercise and put up with the common Border Collie antics. As pups they chew up everything in their reach and drag around anything that is not nailed down. If your personality is suited to them you are truly blessed. Not only because they are such a unique breed but because you, the owner, are graced with an incredible amount of patience, humility and a strong sense of humor.
